Family Therapy in San Luis Obispo

Support For Families Who Want to Feel Close Again

Every person wants to feel loved, known, and like they truly belong. That longing shapes every relationship we have, but nowhere more deeply than in our families.

When communication feels strained, conflict keeps repeating, or trust has been damaged, families can start to feel stuck in painful patterns they do not know how to change.

Using research-backed tools from the Gottman Institute, I help family members learn new ways to communicate, build greater understanding, and repair the patterns that keep them stuck.

I work with family members ages 15 and older, including parents and teens, adult children and parents, and other family members who need support talking through difficult experiences and finding a way forward.

Sessions are available in person in San Luis Obispo and online throughout California.

What to Expect

Sessions are 50 minutes and held in person in San Luis Obispo or online throughout California.

To start, I’ll meet with each person individually to understand their perspective, what has been difficult, and what they hope will feel different. From there, we’ll meet together to work on the patterns keeping your family stuck, and build practical skills for healthier communication, greater understanding, and more productive conversations.

Investment: $190 per 50-minute session. Private pay only. HSA and FSA accepted. I do not accept insurance.

I work with family members who are 15 and older. This includes parents and teens, adult children and parents, and adult siblings. We'll start with individual sessions so I can hear each person's perspective, and then meet together going forward. All participants need to be willing to engage in the process.

Therapy can help, and the most effective place to start is with yourself. Parents who successfully repair estranged relationships almost always go through a significant process of self-examination first, looking honestly at their adult child's experience, taking responsibility for harm (even unintended harm), and making real changes in how they communicate and relate. That process is hard, and it takes time. If you are willing to do that work, therapy gives you a structured, supported space to do it.

Expect to hear uncomfortable things. Repairing estrangement almost always requires parents to sit with their adult child's perspective, including hurt, anger, and grievances, without defending, minimizing, or explaining it away. That does not mean you were a terrible parent or that everything is your fault. It means your child needs to feel genuinely heard before trust can be rebuilt. Therapy will help you develop the capacity to do that, but you have to be willing to go there.

Disagreeing about what happened is normal. Estrangement rarely comes from one clear-cut incident, and both people usually have a different lived experience of the same relationship. What matters more than agreeing on the facts is your willingness to understand why your child felt the way they did and to take that seriously, regardless of your own interpretation. Parents who hold tightly to being right tend to stay estranged. Parents who prioritize the relationship over the argument tend to make progress.
