Couples Counseling and Marriage Therapy in San Luis Obispo

Build a Relationship You Love Coming Home To

Couples therapy helps you improve communication, deepen connection, and develop practical skills for working through life's challenges together.

Using research-backed tools from the Gottman Institute, I'll help you identify strengths, address areas of concern, and focus on the changes that matter most to your relationship.

I see couples in person in San Luis Obispo and online across California.

What Couples Therapy Helps With

Couples come to therapy for many reasons. Some are in crisis, while others want to feel closer and communicate better before small problems become big ones. I help couples with:

Communication & Connection: Recurring arguments, emotional disconnection, managing differences

Family & Life Transitions: Premarital counseling, in-law and extended family boundaries, parenting, blended families, ADHD/neurodiversity in relationships

Trust & Betrayal: Infidelity, financial conflicts, substance abuse

What to Expect: Your First Three Sessions

Session 1: Your Story
We'll talk about how your relationship began, what's been hard lately, and what you're hoping to work on.

Before Session 2: Relationship Checkup
All couples therapy clients complete a Relationship Checkup ($99) - a secure online assessment that identifies your strengths and challenges, giving us a clear roadmap for therapy.

Session 2: Individual Conversations
I'll meet with each of you separately (25 minutes) to understand your personal history and how that shapes how you show up in your relationship.

Session 3: Feedback + Goals
We'll review your Checkup results together and decide what to focus on first, and then use practical, research-based tools to strengthen your relationship.

Sessions are $190 per 50-minute session. Many clients use HSA/FSA funds. I do not accept insurance.

My work is practical, supportive, and grounded in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, a research-based approach built on decades of studying what makes relationships work. I create a safe, balanced space where both partners feel heard and understood while we address the patterns keeping you stuck and build stronger trust, better communication, and deeper emotional connection.

The Gottman Method is an approach to couples therapy that includes a thorough check up of the couple’s relationship and integrates research-based interventions. The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to disarm conflict communication, increase intimacy, respect, and affection, remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy, and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding in the relationship.

The Gottman Method is widely recognized as the gold standard and the most scientifically based model of couples therapy in the world. Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman it is a highly structured, evidence-based approach backed by over 50 years of scientific research.

Yes. Research shows 70–80% of couples using Gottman Method therapy report significant improvement. Success depends on both partners’ engagement and consistency (couples who start sooner and attend regularly see the best results).

I help couples who feel stuck, disconnected, or hurt in their relationship. Common concerns include communication breakdowns, recurring arguments, infidelity and trust repair, emotional disconnection, substance abuse, ADHD or neurodiverse differences, intimacy and desire issues, financial betrayal, major life transitions, co-parenting, and blended family stress. My approach is research-based and focused on helping partners repair, reconnect, and build a stronger, lasting relationship.

In the first three sessions of Gottman Method Couples Therapy, I’ll get to know your relationship history, each of your perspectives, and your goals. You’ll complete the Gottman Relationship Checkup, so we have a clear roadmap of your strengths and challenges. We’ll review the results together, set goals, and begin practical work to improve communication, connection, and trust.

Yes. Online sessions are conducted virtually through secure, HIPAA-compliant video. Online therapy offers convenience, flexible scheduling, and the same evidence-based care as in-person sessions (all without a commute).

Couples therapy works best when both partners are willing to engage, and the relationship is safe. If there's ongoing abuse, an active affair that one partner won't end, or untreated addiction, individual therapy or specialized support may be needed first. If you're unsure whether couples therapy is right for your situation, schedule a 10-minute intro call and we can discuss what type of support would be most helpful.

Yes! I offer a 10-minute intro cal for $15.
